About Attain

For almost 15 years, we have been a champion of independent education. As the sector’s leading magazine for parents and teachers, we hope you find the magazine – and our various online resources – useful.

Attain is a unique publication, highly respected by Heads and schools alike. Just like the sector, we are independent and trusted to offer impartial advice and promote informed debate. We aim to help parents by providing useful, engaging content, both in print and online, which supports them in all aspects of independent education. We help schools to develop their communications using our unique Pressburst software for news, jobs and events and through our annual conference, held in May each year.

When we started Attain fourteen years ago, it was with one purpose in mind: to create a forum for intelligent debate about independent education. We wanted to establish a magazine to help the sector communicate more effectively with those involved in its development: both parents and schools.

We started small – from a kitchen table we distributed the magazine to parents at schools in Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire but soon grew beyond this. In the Autumn of 2007, we formed a distribution partnership with IAPS (the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools) sending the magazine to their schools, who were asked to distribute it to parents. It quickly grew into a sector-wide publication read by Heads and teachers at all schools, prep and senior.

How is Attain financed?

Attain is funded by advertising and subscriptions. We do not accept any central funding nor do we allow organisations to pay for editorial. We only permit those organisations which are directly linked to education to advertise. We do not accept commercial advertising as we believe parents do not want to be bombarded with adverts for luxury goods or lifestyle products.

How do you choose features?

All articles in Attain are chosen entirely on merit. We are looking for quirky, unusual and interesting features which will help parents. Schools cannot buy editorial or contribute to profile features. We do not run features and allow schools to advertise around them. Find out more about contributing to Attain.

How do schools submit editorial?

Feature articles are normally written by Heads and we ask for a skeleton-outline of the idea first so we can see if it is a topic which will work well in Attain. Find out more about contributing to Attain.

How do schools submit news?

We do not accept press releases. All news must be uploaded via Pressburst – the news and communications platform we developed for independent schools and now used by over half the sector. Find out more about Pressburst.

We are extremely grateful to schools who advertise with us and do ask parents to please mention Attain when contacting any school you have seen in the magazine or on our website. Without the support of our advertisers, Attain would not exist. Find out more about advertising with Attain.

Subscriptions for parents and staff

Most parents receive Attain through their child’s school or read it online. If you would like a print copy delivered each term, you can subscribe at a cost of £14.97 per year (£4.99 per issue). Attain is published at the beginning of each term – January, April and September. Find out more about subscribing to Attain.

What is your privacy policy?

We do not sell our subscription data to third-party companies so if you subscribe to Attain, you will only receive Attain! For digital edition subscribers, we will only use your email address to send you the magazine each term. Please see our privacy policy for more details.
