7th July 2017 — St Hilary’s School in Godalming is celebrating the sporting achievements of one of its pupils who has not only qualified for the National Finals in athletics but also in swimming.
Arabella, a member of Guildford Young Athletes Club, won the 800m at the West Surrey Athletics last month with a personal best of 2.46.30 mins and came joint first in the 100m achieving a time of 14.7 secs. Both times were national qualifying times for Year 6 and since no one in that age group achieved the qualifying time for the 100m, Arabella in Year 5, was selected to compete for West Surrey at the National Prep Schools Athletics Championship Finals in Birmingham on the 4th July. Arabella performed very well at the event qualifying for the finals and finished in a respectable 5th place.
Arabella was also part of the successful swimming team from St Hilary’s who won the South East Division of the English Schools Swimming Association (ESSA) at the Guildford Spectrum. Arabella and the rest of the team including Hollie, Katie, Grace and Lottie, went on to represent the School for the first time at the ESSA National Championship Finals in Sheffield, racing in the freestyle and medley relays, where they finished in a commendable 4th and 5th place.
Mrs Whittingham, Headmistress at St Hilary’s School says, “Sport features highly at St Hilary’s and is taught by four specialist teachers whose aim is to help pupils reach their full potential. We are thrilled that Arabella and our swimming team are competing and representing St Hilary’s at a national level. It is a huge achievement and one they should be very proud of.”
