3rd October 2018 — Hosted by Hurst, the regional qualifying tournament attracted 21 teams from the South of England - and a guest appearance from Fettes College in Scotland – all hoping to make the semi-finals to claim a place in the National Finals.
The Hurst girls played five pool matches, each consisting of six minute halves. They got off to a good start in the first two matches, with 1-0 wins against Holme Grange and Hazlewood Schools. Then they really upped their performance in a 6-0 win against Skippers Hill, to secure a further three points and substantially increase their goal difference. In the penultimate group game against Great Walstead the Hurst girls put in a good performance, with some great saves from their goalkeeper, but the forwards struggled to find the back of the net, and the result was a 0-0 draw. The final game against Windlesham produced two well finished goals, which secured the Hurst team top spot in the pool and a place in the quarter- finals.
St Andrews Prep stood between Hurst and a spot in the National Finals. Again, the girls worked extremely hard as they created chances to score and dominated possession. With just one minute left to play in the second half, they were rewarded with a goal to progress to the semi-final and secure a coveted place in the National finals.
Despite improving with each performance throughout the tournament, the Hurst girls conceded their first goal of the day to lose their semi-final against Holme Grange. Onto the play-off for the bronze medal against Ardingly. The first half was well-contested, with both teams playing positive hockey. The second half went in Hurst’s favour as they converted two goal scoring opportunities to secure the bronze medal and cap a very successful day for the U13 girls.
