Bishop’s Stortford College Prep School pupil, William Butcher, won a bronze medal at the IKU World Karate Championships, held in Fortaleza, Brazil last month.
The Championships, which bring together 49 competing nations in 8 age groups were held from 17th to 20th October. Competing within the kumite age category against 10 other 12-13 year-old boys weighing 55-60kg, William won 2 of his 3 gruelling matches, to secure the bronze medal.
William commented, “I was over the moon when I won my bronze. I was so glad that all of my hard work has paid off, it was a great experience to be there, represent England and be a part of the squad.”
William has been learning and developing his karate for the last five and a half years, training with United Karate Association (UKA) at a local Dojo in Bishop’s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth. Next year William is hoping to compete in at least 7 major competitions. Several other members of the squad also attend schools within Bishop’s Stortford.
The College would like to congratulate William on this wonderful achievement and wishes him all the success for his future training and competing.
