Enterprising pupils boost charity

Pupils in Queen's College Junior School have turned £2 coins into nearly £4,000 for a local worthy cause.

20th December 2019 — Children in Years 5 and 6 took part in the Enterprise Project – run by the Rotary Club of Taunton – in aid of the Musgrove Park Hospital League of Friends’ Giraffe Appeal.

They were each given £2 to launch a fund-raising initiative and their efforts were recognised at a special assembly attended by representatives of Rotary and the league. The pupils’ initiatives included car washing, bracelet and jam making and even building bird boxes, which were then sold. The project is raising funds to buy a £17,000 Giraffe Care Station for the Somerset Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The incubator, which combines innovative technology with a family-centric approach, created a natural, peaceful environment for recovery, while still allowing parents to bond with their baby.

Mrs Carol Waterman-Smith, from the league, thanked the pupils for raising £3,918 – taking the running total from Queen’s Junior School since taking part in the annual project to nearly £6,500. "It’s an incredible achievement," she said. "When we heard you were raising money for the league again we were delighted but had no idea it would be such a wonderful amount."

Mrs Khodabandehloo, Headmistress, added: "The project really captured the imagination of the children this year. They enjoyed presenting their novel and creative ideas to the panel of Rotarians. We were impressed with the level of enthusiasm and commitment shown with some budding entrepreneurs even managing to sell some of their creations to panel members!"
