Romeo and Juliet - Bollywood Style, at Foremarke Hall

An unusual approach has been taken to one of the world’s best-known plays by a school drama department. A cast of mainly 12 and 13-year-olds have rehearsed for months to perfect a performance of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet – Bollywood style!

12th April 2018 — Foremarke Hall, Repton’s prep school, decided to set a version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in the Indian sub-continent and to dress the cast accordingly - Bollywood style!

The dancing, instantly recognisable as that of the Hindi cinema, was integral to the script, with some of the story told through it by 12 and 13-year-old pupils.

A spectacular set was built comprising several mogul arches filling the width of the stage and providing multiple entrances and exits.  Each archway was festooned with lights set into the structure and sported a bright and colourful curtain, creating a spectacularly vibrant effect.

Two performances of the play were staged at the weekend for parents, staff and friends of the school.

Commenting, Foremarke Headmaster Richard Merriman said: “Everyone had great fun putting this performance together. The children – including those involved in working on creating the set – put a huge amount of effort in and the result was outstanding.

“Many of those who saw it have been in touch to say how much they enjoyed it. Well done to everyone involved.”
