23rd March 2021 — Lanesborough Prep School and the Royal Grammar School, Guildford have announced that they will merge from 1 September 2021.
The schools will be brought together as the Royal Grammar School (the RGS) and the Royal Grammar Preparatory School (RGS Prep) creating a boys' school offering on their respective sites for pupils aged 3 to 18.
Lanesborough and the RGS have been part of the same charitable trust for 42 years and share the same governance structure.
Announcing the merger, Dr Jon Cox, Headmaster of the RGS said: "Bringing Lanesborough and the RGS together will strengthen our relationship and standing as boys only schools and enable us to offer boys in the local area a pathway from age 3 to 18.
"Our schools have high academic standards and the rigour of assessment for both schools, across all entry points, will be unchanged."
He continued: "We remain firmly committed to offering the majority of our Year 7 and Year 9 places to boys who join from state primary schools and other prep schools.
"This will not change as a result of the establishment of a single school."
Toby Freeman-Day, Head of Lanesborough, added: "As RGS Prep we will retain our unique sense of community and values.
"Continuity of education is, quite rightly, important for many families.
"Through this merger, we are better placed to meet this demand.
"RGS Prep will, however, continue to provide pupils with the very best preparation for senior school, regardless of their chosen destination."
Chairman of Governors, Mrs Sarah Creedy commented: "This is an exciting moment for the RGS as we cement our commitment which has been resolute for over 500 years: to provide the very best, truly rounded education for our students."
