1st October 2020 — Aldwickbury School, an independent all-boys preparatory school located on the outskirts of Harpenden, has today announced the appointment of a new Headmaster, Paul Symes. The appointment follows the retirement of Headmaster Vernon Hales, who will be leaving the position at the end of the academic year, with Mr Symes set to assume the role from September 2021.
Mr Symes joins Aldwickbury School with eighteen years’ teaching experience, across both co-ed and all-boys state and private sectors. In his most recent position at Mill Hill North London, he was initially appointed as Head of Boys’ Games, before assuming the role of Deputy Head, responsible for leading on the school’s pastoral care practices and delivering the Mill Hill Foundation safeguarding provisions.
In response to the appointment, Mr Symes explains, “It is with great pride and delight that I accept the position of Headmaster at Aldwickbury. I feel privileged to be appointed by the Governors and I look forward to building on the outstanding work of Vernon Hales and inheriting such a talented team of staff. Aldwickbury is undoubtedly an outstanding school and I feel excited to be given the opportunity to lead us forward into a new era. We will continue to strive towards promoting an environment of high academic standards, where the boys feel secure and happy, enabling them to excel, in and outside of the classroom.”
The news follows the retirement of Vernon Hales, who has overseen the school and its development over an 18 year period. In response to the appointment, Mr Hales comments, “I am delighted to welcome Paul Symes to the Aldwickbury family as he looks to take over my role as Headmaster in the coming year. With a wealth of experience behind him, including an impressive career in a variety of leadership roles at both Belmont Preparatory School and Mill Hill North London School, I am extremely confident he will bring that Aldwickbury passion and drive to make the school succeed in everything it sets out to achieve.”
Mr Symes will be working closely with Mr Hales in the lead-up to officially joining the Aldwickbury staff from September 2021.
