16th August 2019 — As A Level students across the country eagerly waited to see if they had received a place at their chosen university, students from St John’s College in Southsea woke to find their results waiting for them in their inbox. With a 100% pass rate in many subjects, including Maths and English and 100% A* - A grades for History, students and staff were jumping for joy at another set of outstanding results.

The wide-ability school has a Sixth Form of 90 students. Well-regarded for its pastoral ethos and strong sense of community, the 38 students receiving their results today have taken advantage of the wealth of support and expert advice over the two-year A-Level course.

Head Girl, Hannah was thrilled to receive her results, two A*s and an A in History, Politics and English. Hannah said, “I was extremely nervous last night and this morning, waiting for my results to come through. I expected lower grades, so I am so pleased with my results. I started at St John’s College in Year 7 and have been so supported throughout my time here. The smaller classes allow you to become closer as a year group and gives the support you need to do your best. Now that I have my grades, I am going to re-apply to Oxford and hope to study English Literature there next year.”

After joining St John’s College in Year 3, Jonty leaves the College with a fantastic set of results. He commented “I was pretty happy with my grades, to receive an A* in Politics, an A in Physics and a B in Economics was great. Being dyslexic, I had a bit of a rollercoaster of a time, but I spent every moment of my spare time in Learning Support, revising and attending extra sessions to help me reach my end goal. I let nothing get in my way and I made it out on top! I even set up a small focus group with other students so we could help and support each other which really helped.”

Katie was pleased to receive her first choice offer at the University of Hertfordshire, where she will be studying Diagnostic Radiography. She commented, “I worked extremely hard and spent many hours after school in support lessons, especially for Maths, but it really paid off and I am very excited about starting my degree at Hertfordshire.”

Rezaur was delighted with his grades, two As in Biology and Maths and a B in Chemistry, and will be starting at Southampton University in September to study Medicine. With Medicine being one of the world’s most prestigious and highly-regarded professions, it’s no wonder many students are keen to pursue this career. St John’s College offers all A Level students the chance to join their Medicine Pathway; a programme which maximises students’ chances of gaining admissions onto their chosen course and supports them through the application process. Head Boy, Benjamin Cheeseman, age 18, who was also a Medicine Pathway student, will be heading down this career path with a degree in Medical Pharmacology at Cardiff University.

Jordan was offered her first choice at the University of East Anglia to study English Literature. Jordan commented, “I have absolutely loved being at St John’s College and the support from staff has been amazing – I have been here since Year 7 and it has been such a huge chapter of my life, I’m really going to miss it. I am extremely pleased with all my results (three As) but especially my A* in my Extended Project Qualification where I got to create my own fictional word and wrote a 120 page novel about it – it’s something I am extremely proud of.”

Edward also received his first choice, where he will be studying Politics at the University of Portsmouth. He said, “I joined St John’s College in the Sixth Form and I am extremely pleased I did – my work and confidence has improved since joining, allowing me to get some great results. I think the highlight of my time here has definitely been picking up my results as it has helped me see my potential and what I can achieve - it’ll have a huge impact for years to come.”

Students were sent their results by email at 7am this morning, with over 90% of students, who applied, being offered their preferred place at university. Mrs Mary Maguire, Head of St John’s College, and the Sixth Form staff, were ready to meet and congratulate the students as they came into school to collect their results. She commented, “Yet again, our results clearly demonstrate how well our staff know the students and have supported them to fulfil their potential, resulting in a positive ‘value added’ set of results. Without a doubt, with the introduction of the new specifications, students are finding the new A Levels more challenging, but I am extremely proud that our staff and students have risen to the challenge. Given the recent speculation over A Level Maths, we are thrilled with our 100% pass rate.”

2018 Head Boy Angus will be starting his Chemical Engineering degree at Cambridge University, alongside fellow classmate James, who will be studying at Imperial College London.
