St Margaret's Prep is a thriving independent day school for boys and girls aged 3-11, sharing a 28-acre campus with St Mary's Calne. We moved to our current premises in 1940 and have gradually grown to what we are today – a happy and vibrant school of 180 pupils with broadly equal numbers of boys and girls. At St Margaret’s, we believe our duty is to prepare the children in our care to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world; to equip them with the life skills and attributes that will allow them to flourish in their senior schools and beyond.

Scholarships, Bursaries & Fees
St Margaret's is delighted to be able to offer means-tested Community Bursaries for local children. Our intention is to extend our education opportunities to the wider community and to those children who show academic promise and demonstrate competency in the high-ability range, but whose families have limited financial means.
As children will be required to successfully complete a range of assessments which measure underlying skills, English and Maths, we believe that the Bursaries should apply to children either entering, or currently in, Prep (Years 3-6) in the year of the award. Each application will be means-tested and individually assessed based on specific criteria.
Additionally, we are also delighted to offer means-tested discount of up to 20% for members of the permanent Armed Forces (or Reservists on full-time duties, for the duration of those duties) with children in Year 1 and above.
Community or HM Forces funding may be applied for at any time of the year and the Bursary may commence with immediate effect or from the term following the confirmation of funding.
We ask that families interested in applying for a Community Bursary complete a 'Statement of Financial Circumstances' form to support their application for a Bursary Award. This helps us to determine eligibility and the level of potential funding. Families wishing to apply for an HM Forces Bursary, will be asked to provide proof of employment.
Fees for Kindergarten vary due to the number of sessions attended and access to Free Entitlement Funding.
Fees are paid termly in advance or by monthly direct debit.
Sibling Discount :
St Margaret ’s offers a sibling discount scheme for all children once they commence their full-time education in the Reception class; discounts will be applied according to the rate of fees paid. Families with more than one child at St Margaret’s will be entitled to a 5% discount for the second eldest child. The third and subsequent children will be entitled to a fee reduction of 15%. Children are expected to complete their education at St Margaret’s at the end of the summer term in Year 6 and in this instance siblings will retain their existing discounts. However, if a child leaves prior to the end of Year 6, the discount will be re-calculated depending on the number of children attending the school.
School Fees & Notice of Withdrawal:
Fees are payable in advance. A term’s notice in writing, or payment of a term’s fees in lieu thereof, is required before a child is removed from the school. Similarly, a term’s notice is required before Music or Speech & Drama Lessons are discontinued. No reduction can be made for temporary absence through illness or any other cause, but an insurance scheme is available which provides rebate of fees in case of illness or absence due to quarantine. Please note, fees are subject to variation.
The main entry point to the school is from your child’s 3rd birthday via the Kindergarten. However, we are very happy to accommodate parental requests throughout the year for any year group, subject to availability.
We encourage and welcome prospective parents to visit the school. You can either register for one of our Virtual Open Events or make a 1:1 appointment. At the moment, to reduce the risk for everyone we schedule these visits to begin at 4.30pm, once the majority of our children have left for the day. Subject to you wishing to pursue a place, we would ask your child(ren) to attend Taster Days (subject to Government guidelines) which will give them a true flavour of the school. Taster days also gives us the opportunity to meet your child and gather important information about their character and learning style. We welcome children of all abilities to St Margaret's, subject to being confident that we can cater for their educational, behavioural, physical and emotional needs.
The first step is to register your child for a place at St Margaret’s by completing our registration form and returning it to Mrs Simone Hughes, the Marketing & Admissions Manager, with a non-refundable registration fee of £75.
Your child’s name will be placed on the appropriate class list and you will receive acknowledgement of safe receipt of your form and payment. If all spaces are taken, your child’s name will be placed on a waiting list and you will be kept informed of any movement. Places are allocated based on the date your registration is received.
For a September start, you will be contacted in the January prior to your child joining us to offer a conditional place (conditional upon successful Taster Days). You will be asked to confirm your acceptance of the conditional offer by paying the acceptance fee of £500. This will be deducted from your final invoice at the end of Year 6, unless your child leaves prior to this, in which case it is non-refundable. If you don’t wish to accept your conditional place it will be made available to the waiting list
We understand that circumstances can change, or house moves fall through. If your plans change, you can defer your place for up to one academic year. However, in year groups which are reaching capacity, a place cannot be held open for more than one term from the original start date, and in this case, we will ask you to pay a non-refundable fee (50% of the prevailing annual fees for the relevant year group), in order to guarantee the deferred place is held open.
Taster Days & Assessment:
We welcome children of all abilities to St Margaret's, subject to being confident that we can cater for their educational, physical and emotional needs. Taster days, which are generally organised from March onwards (for September intake), enable us to assess and evaluate your child and make sure s/he will thrive with us. The nature of the taster day depends on the year group your child will be joining:
Kindergarten: taster session (half day or full day)
Reception: full taster day, latest learning journey
Years 1 & 2: two consecutive taster days, latest learning journey and/or school report
Years 3 and above: two consecutive taster days, skills assessment, latest school report, current English and Maths books
Confirmation of Place
You’ll hear from us with confirmation of a guaranteed place very quickly after the Taster Days. In the unlikely event that we are unable to offer your child a guaranteed place, we will refund your acceptance fee in full.
