St Lawrence College is coeducational, day and boarding school for children aged 11-18 years (Senior School).
"One aspect of St Lawrence that distinguishes it from other schools is that we are deliberately a medium sized school, when the trend nationally is towards ever larger school groupings. We believe this is essential to ensuring that individual pupils receive the attention and care they require. At the same time, we are large enough to provide facilities that would be the envy of much larger schools, and have a reputation for punching well above our weight in school competitions!" Antony Spencer, Principal
About the school
Founded in 1879, St Lawrence College is set in picturesque surroundings housing 600 day and boarding pupils from local, UK and international families (400 in the Senior School and 200 in the Junior School). The school prides itself on academic success, traditional values and a friendly and welcoming ambience. The school remains true to its Christian foundations but recognises the needs of a community from many different backgrounds.
The school is situated in a safe and secure campus, in 45 acres of stunning grounds with beautiful old buildings combined with modern facilities. Located in Ramsgate, within easy walking distance of the sea and town, it is only 75 minutes from London on the new high speed rail link to St Pancras International, and less than two hours away from Gatwick and Heathrow airports.
St Lawrence has a long record of providing an excellent academic education within a supportive community, but is also modern in its outlook and very well suited to preparing pupils for a rapidly changing world. Class sizes are small and pastoral support is strong. Academic standards are high, and impressive results are achieved across all years in the school. An extensive choice of GCSEs and A-levels are offered, with an excellent success rate of pupils going on to their first-choice university.
Sporting facilities are exceptional, and expert coaching is provided at all levels in a variety of disciplines including rugby, netball, hockey and cricket. The magnificent sports centre houses a fitness suite, squash courts, climbing wall, dance studio and a large sports hall for badminton, basketball, etc.
Music and drama flourish, enhanced by the school’s 500-seat theatre. Alongside the traditional chapel, library and dining hall, sits a modern coffee shop, and boarders are able to use all the school’s facilities in the evenings and at weekends. All pupils benefit from an extensive activities programme which includes the CCF (Combined Cadet Force) and a thriving Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, as well as chess, archery, golf, fencing, football, sailing, horse riding, swimming, table tennis, musical theatre and many more activities.
Boarding pupils enjoy a ‘home from home’ experience, both in terms of comfort and atmosphere, and a wide range of evening and weekend activities are provided. In recent years, a massive programme of investment has created some truly remarkable facilities for boarders, including a new girls’ boarding house and a modern purpose-built home for junior boarders. All senior boarders are housed in single or double rooms with en-suite facilities and younger boarders are placed in rooms of between two and five pupils with modern streamlined en-suite bathrooms.
