Millfield Prep School is an IAPS boarding and day school for boys and girls aged 2 to 13 in Somerset. “Pupils at Millfield have the time of their lives” ISI Inspection Report
About the school
Millfield Prep’s strength lies in the belief that every child is an individual. Our vision has always been to discover and develop the talents and abilities of each child. With world class facilities, small class sizes and a breadth of subjects on offer, we aim to give every child the maximum opportunity to find their individual strengths and aim for excellence. Our rigorous academic programme is supported by a strong extra-curricular programme in the Arts, Drama, Music and Sport, including over 50 extra-curricular activities such as dance, skiing and pottery. Pupils take part in individual sports and team games and we compete in regional and national fixtures. Our outstanding facilities include an equestrian centre, an art and design centre, music school, recital hall, golf course, 25m indoor pool, tennis courts and a Learning Development Centre.
The quality of boarding is exceptional and fully supports the school's aim to provide excellent pastoral care for its pupils. The starting age for boarding is 7 years old. Boys and girls live separately in well-appointed houses. The boarding houses are seen by pupils very much as home rather than an extension of school and foster a genuine family feel with the care and support of their houseparents and assistant houseparents. Every weekend all boarders have the opportunity to get involved in a wide choice of activities from canoeing, trampolining and jet skiing to a trip to the wildlife park or the cinema.
Millfield Prep and Senior Schools enjoy a close relationship, which means a smooth transition for pupils at age 13. The Prep pupils are given numerous opportunities to experience sporting or other co-curricular events at the Senior School and in Year 7 enjoy a taster day organised by Sixth Form prefects.
Scholarships, Bursaries & Fees
Candidates are invited to sit for an Academic Scholarship or awards for excellence in Art, Chess, Music and Sport. Applications are also welcome from good all-rounders; boys and girls who have reached a good standard academically and who show promise in other specific areas such as music or sport.
Scholarships may be honorary or carry a fee reduction of up to 15%. If a scholarship has been awarded, parents in genuine financial need can also apply for a means-tested bursary.
A small number of Headmistresses’ Awards may carry reductions in excess of 15% in recognition of exceptional excellence in a particular area or areas.
For those entering Years 6, 7 and 8, assessments will usually take place in the January/February preceding the year of entry and will follow the Millfield Prep School Entrance Examinations procedure. Details are usually available by October before the year of entry and can be found on the Admissions section of our website.
For further information, please contact Fiona Gordon, the Tutor for Admissions on 01458 832446 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Millfield fees are as inclusive as possible and extras are kept to a minimum. The day fee includes tuition, most activities at school, three-course lunch, games and prep, textbook loan, pupils’ personal accident insurance, contribution to travel and accommodation when representing the school, and internet access. The boarding fee includes all of the above plus breakfast, three-course supper and laundry.
Entry to Millfield Prep is possible into all year groups, with the largest intake at Year 7. We will consider entry in January and April, as well as in September.
If you would like to consider a place at Millfield Prep School for your child, the first thing to do is to come and visit us. We would be delighted to give you a tour of the school and if you think your child would enjoy Millfield, you can formally apply for a place by returning the completed Registration Form and Fee.
We will then request a reference from your current school and on receipt of this, invite you to bring your child for interview and assessment. If they would like to spend the day with us, they would be most welcome. We would then formally offer a place and the return of the Acceptance Form and Fee completes the entry procedure.
You may, of course, enter your child for future years but we would not normally complete the paperwork until the year preceding admission. Most children transfer to Millfield, subject to a satisfactory final report from the Headmistress.
