The Downs Malvern is a vibrant day, weekly, flexi and full boarding prep school for girls and boys aged 3-13. The school is set within its own impressive and beautiful 55-acre campus on the western edge of the Malvern Hills and is associated with Malvern College. Children benefit from excellent teaching alongside superb extra-curricular, boarding and sports facilities, including a multi-million-pound sports hall, art studio, IT suite and all-weather sports pitch.
About the school
A first class education is delivered in a secure, caring and extremely well resourced environment and all pupils are encouraged to do their very best academically, creatively, physically, socially and spiritually so that they may achieve beyond their greatest expectations. The boarding provision is excellent and the pastoral care exemplary.
To support the academic programme, there are many extra-curricular activities from which all pupils find something to enthuse and inspire them.
The strong sense of community, founded on outstanding relationships throughout, is the trademark of The Downs Malvern.
“Where children are encouraged to use their initiative and to keep their minds and eyes wide open. It is very special ….. an unforgettable experience.” - Current Parent
The School offers 11+ Scholarships for pupils showing particular ability in the following areas: Academic, Art, Drama, Music, Sport as well as an All-Round award. The Headmaster welcomes applications from the parents of children in Year 6 at their current schools.
On Friday 29th June, the children, staff and parents all gathered in the Sports Hall for the end-of-term Speech Day and Prize Giving.
3rd July 2018 — The sun was shining and the day, as always, was a huge success. A huge 'well done' to, not only all of the children who won a prize, but to everyone, for all of their hard work and effort over the year! We are proud of each and every one of you.
Congratulations must also go to Iona and Tom, who will be the new Head Girl and Head Boy. 'Many thanks' to Sophia and Sam for all of their hard work in their roles this past year.
Year 8 had a lovely final evening on Thursday 28th June at their Leavers' Dinner and Disco.
3rd July 2018 — The evening began with pre-dinner drinks on the Boarders' Lawn, before they headed down to a beautifully decorated Lower Dining Room for a delicious dinner! The evening came to a perfect end with a disco in the Old Library.
We wish all of Year 8 the best of luck in their next chapter. You will all be missed!
Year 8 spent four days at Cwm Llwch as part of their Leavers' Experience during the penultimate week of term.
28th June 2018 — On Tuesday 19th June, after a long walk in, the children set up camp and wandered off to the lake to catch leeches and newts! A delicious meal of chilli-con-carne was followed by a host of ghostly stories from both pupils and staff.
Wednesday was wet on all accounts, but the poor weather did not dampen their spirits, as the children enthusiastically took part in climbing, abseiling and gorge-walking. Lots of fears were conquered and the team spirit and peer support was some of the best the staff have ever seen! That evening, the staff were treated to the many talents (hmmm…!) of Year 8, before a few games and bed.
Thursday was spent on the beautiful River Wye. Canoeing in the morning and raft-building in the afternoon left all of the children both exhilarated and exhausted. A fish and chip supper rounded off this wonderful day, before some more games and a late bedtime.
A morning of relaxation followed before their journey home, ready for warm showers and a comfy bed. What a fantastic trip!
Wow! What a fantastic day Pre-Prep had on Thursday 21st June at their annual Camp Out!
28th June 2018 — The weather worked in our favour and the sun was shining! There were so many wonderful activities on offer throughout the day, including face painting, pizza making, snail racing, bracelet making and giant bubbles. Mrs Hunter kindly came over to lead a music session and the Headmaster, Mr Cook, held the much-anticipated tug-of-war at the end of the day!
Many thanks to all of the parents for their fantastic contributions and to all of the staff throughout the school for their help in organising another very successful Camp Out.
'Well done' to the children in Pre-Prep, who performed brilliantly in their production of 'Hats Off!' on Tuesday evening.
28th June 2018 — Together with the glorious weather, the evening was a perfect way to end the year in Pre-Prep. Many thanks must go to the parents for helping to provide all of the fabulous costumes and to the Pre-Prep staff for putting the performance together and helping it to run so smoothly. We are already looking forward to next year.
On Monday 18th June, the Year 8 children hosted the annual French Day, as part of their Leavers' Experience.
21st June 2018 — The first part of the afternoon was in the cafés, which the Year 8 children had put together. The other children throughout the school went to the café that belonged to their house and had to practise their French by ordering what they wanted from a choice of different French pastries - délicieux!
Afterwards, the children got to enjoy the variety of fun activities and games that the Year 8s had created, all of which involved, in some way, having to practise their French. There was face painting, dressing up, cake decorating, croquet and even having the chance to throw a wet sponge at two very willing volunteers!
The afternoon was, as always, a huge success, where all of the children involved were able to have a fun-filled afternoon whilst practising and perfecting their French.
