Children at King's benefit from a broad and balanced curriculum which is designed to educate the whole person as well as to gain the best possible academic results. Whatever their talents, pupils at King's Prep are encouraged to grasp every opportunity both inside and outside the classroom and through involvement in Music, Sport, Drama and the wide range of extra-curricular clubs and activities on offer. King's Prep is large enough to provide a full range of options and facilities, but small enough to create and maintain a 'family feel' where teachers know everyone really well.
Our Christian community welcomes children from a wide variety of backgrounds and faiths. As a Cathedral School, our aim is that girls and boys will grow happily in understanding, knowledge and confidence, under-pinned by the positive values which shape King's. This website will, I am sure, give you a taste of what King's Rochester is like - but it cannot replicate the feel of the place which is so important in choosing the right school for your child. Please do come and visit King's and meet our happy, engaging, confident and well-mannered pupils - and see how we help each child to flourish.
Pupils usually enter the Preparatory School at the age of 8 but candidates of other ages may apply to join in any year as long as places are available.
There is a large intake into Year 7 at age 11, both from other independent Preparatory Schools and local maintained Junior schools.
Every year we hear from our new Year 7 parents that King’s is a great place to get used to being at Senior School. They feel that their children have the best of both worlds – Preparatory and Senior - because, rather than starting life at the bottom of a huge secondary school alongside pupils who already seem like adults, they enjoy life at the top end of the Preparatory School, along with our Year 8 pupils and this gives them the early opportunity to hold positions of responsibility. In Years 7 and 8, many subjects are taught by specialist Senior School teachers in Senior classrooms and labs, but the pupils still have their base within the smaller Preparatory School. This arrangement gives children the time to get used to new, more sophisticated methods of teaching and learning at Year 7 level, whilst still having the support and space to find their feet and grow in confidence as one of the top two years in the Preparatory School. In Years 4, 5 and 6, lessons all take place within the Preparatory School with the exception of Art and Design, Drama and Technology which are taught in the same specialist rooms/ spaces used by the Year 7 and 8 pupils.
All children who have registered an interest in joining the School will be invited to an assessment and interview with the Headmaster of the Preparatory School. The assessment will be in English, Mathematics and Non-Verbal Reasoning. We will also request consent to approach your child’s current school for a reference. Assessments for 11+ entry take place in the November or March prior to the September of entry. If children are unable to attend either of these Assessment Days, we will be happy to accommodate tests on alternative dates.
Experience shows that the general feel of a school is a major deciding factor in choosing the right school for your child. Please come and meet our engaging, articulate, well-mannered and quietly confident pupils. Come and see how we help each child flourish. The Headmaster of the Preparatory School will be pleased to show you around.
