We share the high aspirations you have for your child and offer an outstanding education to all our pupils, whatever their abilities, interests and talents. Holmewood pupils are happy, content, industrious, enthusiastic, motivated and hugely proud of their school, which generates a wonderful, almost tangible, atmosphere of endeavour and adventure.
About the school
Holmewood House is a leading prep school in the South-East with a well-deserved reputation for academic, sporting, musical and extra-curricular excellence.
Holmewood is a serious option for London-based parents who want a weekly boarding school in the country while maintaining a city lifestyle. Tunbridge Wells is just 50 minutes from Charing Cross which makes the return trip to school on a Sunday evening easily manageable.
This is a school which marries the best traditions to the latest educational thinking within an environment which is remarkable for its beautiful country location and superb facilities.
Every individual in the school is encouraged to strive for their personal best in every sphere of school life so that their potential goes neither unidentified nor to waste.
The school has an enviable academic record of scholarships gained and Common Entrance exams safely negotiated. Last year, a record 28 scholarships (academic, music, drama and sport) were gained by 19 Year 8 pupils to a range of senior independent schools.
We would be delighted to welcome you to Holmewood so you can see for yourself why our pupils love coming to school every day.
Scholarships, Bursaries & Fees
Scholarships are awarded annually for entry to Years 3 – 7 (subject to places being available) to children showing academic potential.
We are happy to assess all applicants but stress that successful applicants will be those who are doing exceptionally well in their current schools.
Candidates are asked to undertake a series of assessment tests in reading, spelling and maths. Year 5 and above are also required to do a non-verbal reasoning test. We then rank the candidates according to how they have performed in the tests.
The top few candidates will be offered a scholarship of 20% of the basic fees. Parents can then apply for additional bursary funding. Please note that bursary funding is limited and will be allocated to candidates in order of merit based on an assessment of the financial situation of the candidate’s parents.
If parents wish to apply for bursary funding, they are required to complete a bursary form and submit tax returns so that we can allocate the pot of funds available in the fairest way possible. We can, in exceptional circumstances, offer a scholarship and bursary funding to cover 100% of the fees plus extras.
Financial information submitted by parents is treated with the utmost confidence. Decisions regarding the level of award offered are made by the Bursary Committee (the Headmaster, the Chairman of the Governors and the Finance Bursar).
Scholarships are tenable, subject to satisfactory progress, until the pupil leaves Holmewood. Bursary funding is reviewed if the circumstances of the candidate’s parents change.

Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage One (Nursery to Year 2)
Entry to the Pre-Prep is non-selective. Children are invited to the school for a visit to allow them to familiarize themselves with the school’s surroundings and see for themselves what it might be like to be a pupil at the school. Key Stage One pupils undertake a short assessment in Literacy and Numeracy to inform us of the level at which the child is working, together with any potential support the child may require. It is also important that the Head of Pre-Prep can make a judgement whether or not a child is likely to benefit from the education on offer within the context of the school’s stated aims, ethos and behaviour policy.
Holmewood House Preparatory Department is essentially a non-selective, independent, co-educational school that welcomes applications from pupils from all social or cultural backgrounds who will profit from the educational opportunities that Holmewood provides and who will contribute fully and enthusiastically to the wider life of the school. Pupils are admitted to Year 3 at the beginning of the academic year following their seventh birthday and from then on at any stage up to Year 8, subject to vacancies and entrance assessment.
