Berkhamsted Preparatory School opened in September 1998 as a new co-educational school, offering first-class facilities for the 7 to 11 age group, in conjunction with the highest standards of teaching and educational development. All classes offer a happy, caring environment where children are encouraged to investigate and explore the world around them. Classes at all levels have access to computers. Key features include a multi-purpose hall, modern dining facilities and a full range of specialist classrooms (e.g. Science laboratory, 2 ICT suites, new Drama Studio and art classrooms). During 2013/2014 the Preparatory School will see the addition of a tennis court, a fives court and an outdoor learning area. The Preparatory School also has use of Senior School facilities including extensive playing fields, additional tennis courts, a Sports Centre, a swimming pool and a 500-seat theatre.
All children are encouraged to develop to their full potential and grow in confidence and independence. The School's general approach is progressive, while retaining traditional values and standards; courtesy and politeness towards others are expected at all times. Academic achievement is of great importance, but the emphasis on other activities such as sports and music ensures that pupils receive a well-rounded education.
A recent ISI Inspection Report (November 2012) noted that the school offers a high quality educational experience to its pupils, whose achievement was excellent because of their highly positive attitude to learning. Personal development of pupils was also found to be excellent, exemplified in the pupils' high levels of interpersonal skills, confidence and self-esteem. It was also reported that the pupils feel happy, secure and well cared for due to the school's exemplary pastoral care.
A wide range of voluntary extra-curricular activities is offered at lunch-time, the end of the school day and on Saturday mornings, including art, drama, music and sport. Choirs and orchestras perform in concerts and services throughout the year and school teams compete successfully in a variety of sports.
As part of the Berkhamsted Schools Group, the Early Years and Key Stage One are located at Berkhamsted Pre-Preparatory School at the Haresfoot site, before transferring to Berkhamsted Preparatory School for Key Stage Two at the Doctors Commons Road site.
