Downe House School

Downe House isn't simply one of the country's leading boarding schools; it is a wonderfully caring and nurturing community, where girls aged 11 to 18 are given every opportunity and encouragement to develop new skills and flourish academically.

About the school

Downe House is a true full boarding school with a unique blend of traditional values and forward thinking, where every girl is encouraged to explore and discover all her strengths. Not tied by the constraints of a traditional school day, we can provide an exceptional range of co-curricular and enrichment opportunities both inside and outside the classroom.

Of course, academic results matter greatly to us and we expect girls to aspire to excellence in all they do, both in the classroom and beyond. However, we place equal importance on equipping every girl with a well-established work ethic and a core set of traditional values, skills and beliefs that will allow her to flourish in today’s rapidly changing world.

With only girls in the classroom, in the science labs, on stage and on the sports field, both intellectual and physical confidence can grow without any stereotyping or gender-weighted expectations.

So many things make the difference at Downe House. For girls in the Lower School, it includes the term spent in France by all Lower Fourth girls. The Upper School and Sixth Form have the opportunity to take part in our far-reaching Global Schools’ Exchange Programme with 16 partner schools across six continents. Not to mention our Elective Programme which provides ‘super-curricular’ academic enrichment to challenge and stretch able girls and a holistic approach to wellbeing through the ‘Finding Balance’ programme which gives girls the tools for life to care for themselves as well as each other.

We aim to ignite a love of learning and take each girl on an adventure in education to ensure that when the time comes to leave Downe House, she believes that there is nothing that she cannot achieve in the world. Find out more at www.downehouse.net

Scholarships, Bursaries & Fees

We award scholarships to girls with Academic ability, Art, Sport, Music and Drama. As a Scholar or Exhibitioner, girls have access to our specialist Scholarship programme which offers a range of specialist enrichment activities to inspire her and extend her knowledge, a mentor to guide and encourage her on her journey and important leadership opportunities designed to stretch and challenge her.

We are committed to offering talented girls access to everything which a Downe House education provides, regardless of their means. Last year, 22 girls benefited from full and partial means-tested bursaries. Means-tested bursaries are available at all points of entry to Downe House and vary in size based on the circumstances of the applicant’s family.

Admissions Process

We always encourage you to come and visit us so you can see school life for yourself and your daughter. After this, the next step is to register your daughter by completing the online registration form and transferring your registration fees. You can also download a Registration Form from the website https://www.downehouse.net/admissions/admissions-process/ to complete and post to our Registrar.

Following registration and one year prior to entry, girls are invited to attend an Assessment Day which takes place in the Michaelmas (Autumn) Term – we will also request a report from your daughter’s current Headteacher prior to this assessment. Assessment Days at 11+, 12+ and 13+ can be challenging, but we also want the girls to enjoy the experience, and believe it is the best way for us to get to know each girl. At our Assessment Days, girls take part in a variety of activities – from drama and design technology to team building workshops. Every girl who takes part in our Downe House Assessment Day has an interview with the Headmistress, completes a challenging academic test and has a tour of the School as well as lunch with some of our current girls. We know from experience that these different experiences not only show us more than written papers alone, but also give your daughter the chance to experience life at the School.

Following the Assessment Day, each girl’s performance is carefully considered and offers of places are made. These offers are usually conditional on satisfactory results being achieved in the Common Entrance examinations, which are sat in each girl’s own school as the second stage of assessment. Potential scholars are also identified after the Assessment Day which begins a separate scholarship procedure.
