Stroud School, King Edward VI Preparatory School

Day Hampshire

Stroud is a true preparatory school. When you visit us, expect to see pupils who are happy, respectful and honest. These three fundamental attributes ensure that our leavers are fully prepared to move on to the next stage of their education and the start of their young adult lives.

Our provision for education, within 20 acres of rural Hampshire, allows for exploration and the development of a love of learning. Crucially, this is carefully balanced across a wider curriculum that provides not only academic rigour and focus, but also the sort of opportunities and experiences that remain with our pupils for the rest of their lives.

About Stroud School, King Edward VI Preparatory School

The school was founded in Surrey in 1926. In 1946 it moved to Wiltshire, and finally settled in 1953 in our attractive rural setting in Hampshire. Highwood House is a beautiful red brick building constructed in 1850 by Captain Suckling (related to Lord Nelson). The house stands in 20 acres of grounds which include playing fields, forest school, a heated swimming pool, tennis courts, an all weather riding arena, stables, woodland, a narrow river, a natural pond and gardens, as well as a school farm.

Since 2012 the school has extended its facilities with a new dining room, constructed sustainably with a living, seedum roof. We have also opened a new classroom block for specialist teaching in art, modern foreign languages, and design technology. The introduction of a kiln, a 3-d printer and a laser cutter adds to the wide variety of materials the pupils can explore in these subjects. The ASD Multi-Purpose Hall includes a full size sports hall, large viewing gallery, changing rooms, staging and lighting. A high standard of specification has been used throughout; it is used extensively for sport, drama, assemblies and community opportunities. The ESD Early Years Building was constructed in 2007. It contains four classrooms, large shared area, cloakrooms and specifically designed outside area for the education of young children aged 2 years nine months – 5 years.

Within the house itself is a well stocked fiction and reference library, an extensive Science laboratory and an Information Technology room. External buildings include individual cookery, art, technology and music rooms. Within the grounds is our Millennium conservation area including two ponds with dipping platforms and timber walkways over marshy areas giving children the chance to study the natural environment at first hand.

Scholarships & Bursaries

11+ Means Tested Scholarships, and honorary scholarships are available each year to pupils in a wide range of curricukum areas, including the wider curriculum. Scholarship assessment and interview dates are held in February of each year and scholars are offered a fee discount of up to 15%. An honorary scholarship does not result in discounted fees, however all scholars are automatically part of the Able, Gifted and Talented provision undertaken throughout the year. Opportunities to extend the scholars exist within the school, but are also arranged on an external basis. Often, pupils in this group will be included in the teaching structure of our senior school, King Edwards VI, where they can move through the Key Stage 3 curriculum and into GCSE and A level work.
