St Peter's School York

Day Weekly Boarding Yorkshire

As one of the oldest schools in the world, St Peter's School, York, combines a rich heritage with outstanding academic achievement. The St Peter's School Foundation, encompassing Clifton School and Nursery, St Olave's School and St Peter's School, provides its pupils with a stimulating and varied education.

About St Peter's School York

St Peter’s accommodates both boarding and day pupils, and the ethos for the whole school is driven by the strong boarding community. Boarding is available from age ten, and boarding houses are kept small, housing between 20 and 45 pupils, ensuring a warm, friendly and homely environment is maintained at all times. Pupils remain in one house throughout their time at school, so that older pupils provide leadership and support to newer arrivals. “Boarding provides a structure that many children thrive in, and helps pupils to develop confidence, tolerance and resilience, as well as giving them greater access to the wealth of co-curricular activities available after school and at weekends,” says Leo Winkley, Head Master of St Peter’s. Boarding at St Olave’s and St Peter’s is rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.

Pupils who join Clifton School and Nursery between the ages of 3 and 8 not only have the advantage of highly trained, experienced staff, but benefit from access to the facilities and extensive grounds of the Senior School.

St Olave’s, for children aged 8 – 13, offers small classes, unrivalled facilities and a vast array of academic and co-curricular opportunities. Specialist subject teaching is introduced in the final three years, giving pupils the best possible preparation for the transition to St Peter’s itself.

From 13, pupils at St Peter’s follow a broad curriculum for one year before choosing from an impressive variety of subjects at IGCSE and A-level. Together, the schools provide the ideal environment for pupils to succeed – St Peter’s School achieves outstanding results, with pupils passing 83% of A-levels at A*-B in 2013, and more than half of all leavers progressing to further study at Russell Group and elite UK and international universities.

Alongside such academic success, pupils are encouraged to explore interests outside the classroom. Sport and the arts are particularly strong, as are the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, Combined Cadet Force and Community Action group, which supports pupils in numerous volunteering activities across the local community. The variety of activities on offer ensures every pupil can develop his or her potential to the full, no matter where their strengths may lie.

The School itself occupies a verdant 47-acre site on the banks of the river Ouse, yet is just ten minutes’ walk from York Minster and the historic heart of the city. It is less than two hours by train from Kings Cross, and the school is just minutes away from York station, making it easily accessible.
