Daneshill Pupil takes 1st place at British Biathlon Championships.
Daneshill School are delighted that Saffia Rougier claimed first place in the U10s Biathlon Championships 2017 and Nicholas Thomas came third place in the U11s.
Pupils from Daneshill School, near Hook, travelled to Solihull to compete in the British Modern Biathlon Championships 2017 last Saturday. Saffia Rougier returned U10 Biathlon Champion 2017 taking first place and Nicholas Thomas took third place in the U11s.
The 2017 British Modern Biathlon Championships took place at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre in Solihull with nearly 800 athletes. Modern Biathlon is an exciting multi-discipline sporting environment which involves swimming and running with distances varying between age groups. The youngest three age groups swim 50m and run 800m with the U13, U14 and Masters Classes swimming 100m and running 1600m and the U15, U16, U17, U19, Junior and Senior classes swimming 200m and running 1600m.
All athletes had qualified for the Championships at preliminary qualifying competitions that were held across the country in September and October. Competition was extremely fierce with some of the best swimmers and runners from throughout the UK taking part.
The Daneshill team had trained incredibly hard getting ready for the competition, consisting of early morning, evening and weekend running and swimming sessions. After an outstanding 800m race, in which she took 14 seconds off her previous PB, Saffia Rougier in year 5 became the U10 British Champion 2017! Saffia’s times were 800m – 2.55 PB and 50m swim – 34.54 PB. Saffia swims for Basingstoke Blue Fins swimming club. She is one of the club’s top swimmers and is one of the best swimmer’s for her age group in the country at present.
Another outstanding achievement came from Nicholas Thomas in year 6, who achieved a bronze medal in the U11 group. He also accomplished two PB’s. Nicholas achieved the following times: 800m – 2.31 PB and 50m swim – 34.99 PB. Nicholas runs for Basingstoke Athletics Club and has won all of his U11 races so far this term. Nicholas also trains with Basingstoke Blue Fins Swimming Club.
Further superb achievements came from Fechi Okafor in year 7 and Chi Okafor in year 8 who both finished in 11th place and Isla Lock in year 6 who achieved 26th position.
