About James Allen's Girls' School

Key to our success is the ability attract a diverse mix of intellectually curious and dynamic pupils, with a means tested bursary scheme making the school accessible to girls from all economic backgrounds. Academic scholarships are also available alongside scholarships in music, sport and art.

JAGS is consistently ranked highly in national A-level results tables and students go on to study the top institutions in the UK and abroad. Every girl is encouraged to explore a wide range of subjects when the join, covering all key areas and including several language options and creative disciplines. As they mature and choose to focus on subject specialisms, our teachers will help them gain qualifications at the highest level as well as develop research skills and become independent learners.

Our facilities include 22 acres of playing fields and a sports complex that includes a swimming pool, climbing wall and astro pitches. A professionally designed theatre gives girls a chance to learn about performing arts whilst a vibrant music department holds performances throughout the year which from next year will be in our new Community Music Centre with its 500 seat auditorium and 15 practice rooms.

School trips in the UK and around the world provide further opportunities to enhance academic learning and broaden life skills. Recent trips include volunteering at a school in Uganda and performing concerts during a music tour of Italy.

At JAGS we care that your daughter is happy and have a strong pastoral care team to give them support if they need it. The school has two School Nurses who are available to deal with medical and personal problems. Students can also talk to CAMHS counsellor and our School Chaplain.

We know we are lucky and that we gain from sharing what we have. We are part of the community around us and being 'Good Neighbours' has been our policy for many years.

Scholarships & Bursaries

At JAGS, we strive to attract intellectually curious girls, regardless of their economic background, so we have our own means-tested bursary scheme for all year groups from 11+ entry upwards. We also offer scholarships to pupils who show exceptional potential academically and in Art, Music and Sport at 11+, deferred 13+ and 16+ entry. Sports scholarships are also offered at 11+ and deferred 13+ entry.

Our bursaries are crucial in making us accessible to everyone, not just to those whose families can afford the fees. We provide financial assistance for up to 100% of fees as well as the costs of uniform, travel, trips and lunches. Bursaries cover well over 80% of all fees for the 130 pupils whose families currently receive them.

Bursaries may be awarded on entry across all year groups and may also help current pupils continue their education at JAGS should their families’ financial circumstances change.

Currently the School funds at least 20 new bursaries every year and we will undertake new fundraising initiatives over the next year to help us increase this. Our aim is to be needs-blind.

We award scholarships to recognise high academic potential or the ability to excel in art, music or sports. Up to 20 Academic scholarships may be awarded each year based on the results of the Senior School Entrance Examination. In addition to those for Music, Art and Sport, these scholarships may be supplemented on a means-tested basis in line with the bursary scheme. Our scholarships are usually £1000 per annum; however, in exceptional circumstances, we will award up to £4000 per annum to highly talented applicants.

We also award a number of Sixth Form scholarships based on GCSE results; these include awards through competition for Art, and Music.
